For Sama is a deeply moving cinematographic love letter to Waad Al-Kateabs daughter Sama, born in 2016, and also a legacy and document of the resistance in Aleppo. From 2012 on, the young student Al-Kateab documents the uprisings against the regime in Aleppo, like many other video activists alongside her: She films demonstrations, bombs, injuries but also survivors, friendship, and hope. She falls in love with the doctor Hamza and becomes pregnant, but always continues to film – despite and for Sama. With absolute openness and great intimacy, she gives an insight into her life and her world between courage and despair, illuminating it from a female perspective. The film which was produced for British Channel 4 was awarded best documentary film at its premiere in Cannes and was furthermore nominated for an Academy Award.
