Fiction, Director: Abdulmohsen Aldhabaan, Saudi Arabia 2019, 75 min., Arab. with En. ST
When Nasser learns that his father is dying, he travels from the capital Riyadh to his rural home village with his teenage son Waleed. Faced with the archaic traditions of the village and the legacy of the dying man, the boy increasingly rebels against his father, who exerts more and more pressure on him. The mysterious disappearance of a young man adds tension to the hardened conditions, and Waleed’s boredom takes on destructive traits. Aldhabaan’s feature film debut cleverly dismantles the patriarchal relations in the men’s world he portrays – captured in shimmering images by Tunisian director of photography Amine Messadi.
