Letter to My Sister
Documentary, Director: Habiba Djahnine, Algeria 2006, 68 min., Fr./Tamazight with En. ST

Nabila Djahnine was the chairwoman of the women organisation “Thighri N’tmettouth“ (Women’s Outcry) in the Kabylian city of Tizi-Ouzou, consistently and vehemently criticizing the structural social and patriarchal violence that Algerian women are confronted with. She was murdered there in 1995. Ten years later, her sister Habiba returns to Tizi-Ouzou to take up Nabila’s legacy in order to understand this dark chapter of the civil war against the background of Algerian society and its diversity. This personal film is both an impressive homage to a fighter and an investigative approach to the female dimension of one of the most painful chapters of the Algerian civil war.
