After 10 years in prison due to political activities, Ali goes back to his hometown. His family is eagerly waiting for him, with the hope that Ali can give a stop to the tyranny of his older brother, Tolba. Nevertheless the detention broke Ali apart and his morale and idealism have given way to conformity and apathy. On the other hand, his nephew, Ibrahim is rebelling against the patriarchal arbitrariness and the inequality of opportunities in a corrupted society. On his side he has the beautiful daughter of his neighbor (played by the famous Lebanese singer, Magida al-Rumi). Chahine’s fascinating musical tragedy is a touching parable of Egypt’s condition in the 70s.
