Beirut, My City
Documentary, director: Jocelyne Saab, Lebanon, 1982, 37 min., Fr. with En. ST
In July 1982, the Israeli army besieged Beirut. Four years earlier, Jocelyne Saab saw her 150-year-old childhood home go up in flames. In the face of personal loss and Beirut’s state of destruction, Saab embarks together with her collaborator, the playwright and director Roger Assaf, on a journey of reflection on the intricate relationship between the city, identity, and loss. Considered by Saab to be her most important film, Beirut, My City questions the relation of fact to fiction, using poetry and other forms of intermediality to witness what emerges from a city’s ruins.
ALFILM is presenting the film in its newly restored version by the Jocelyne Saab Association.
The film contains sensitive content and graphic images that might be disturbing for some audiences.
