Former rapper Anas (Anas Basbousi) takes a job at a cultural centre in the working-class neighbourhood of Sidi Moumen in Casablanca. Encouraged by their new teacher, his students will try to free themselves from the weight of restrictive traditions, in order to live their passion and express themselves through hip hop. “Casablanca Beats” is a thrilling mixture of street musical, inspirational-teacher drama and documentary, as the centre’s real attendees are cast as fictionalized versions of themselves. “Casablanca Beats” screened in Competition at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival.
