Filmic Interventions – MASTER CLASS with Eliane Raheb
24.4.2022 | 17.00 | Silent Green
Moderation: Birgit Kohler (Head of Programming of Arsenal – Institut für Film und Videokunst in Berlin).
Without shying away from explosive topics and with great personal commitment, Eliane Raheb (*1972) deals with the aftermath of the Lebanese civil war, which ended in 1990. Her political documentaries such as „Sleepless Nights“ (2012) and „Miguel’s War“ (2021) see themselves as militant, creative interventions against a state-imposed collective amnesia, which, to this day, prevents a public debate about guilt and atonement to take place. Based on protagonists, who are perpetrators and victims, and who, as such, are marked differently by the war, her films offer insights into a deeply divided, confessionally as well as politically fragmented, and traumatized society. The master class, conceived and moderated by Birgit Kohler, focuses on the questions of memory work in films and the possibilities of making a politically committed cinema.
