→ Part of: Spotlight: Contemporary shorts from Sudan
Set in the final days of Sudan’s December 2018 uprising, Bougainvillea compresses the revolution into a locked room: a cramped women’s cell where six detainees wait, argue, comfort, and recalibrate their fear into resolve. Working with the textures of confinement—breath, sweat, whispered stories—Faiz lets resistance emerge as choreography of a shared ritual, a flash of laughter, a hennaed hand lifted against the wall. Dreamlike inserts and a recurring image of the bougainvillea plant—delicate, stubborn, hard to drown—fold public history into private endurance. The film refuses the spectacle of the street to ask what a revolution feels like when the body is immobilised: how solidarity is made, and how freedom is rehearsed before it arrives
