Nargis is a middle-aged mother who, under pressure from her son and daughter, is about to immigrate to the United States. As her departure approaches, she feels reluctant and unprepared, fearful of leaving her home behind and stepping into the unknown. Driven by her sense of responsibility toward her children, who indulge in wishful thinking about the opportunities awaiting them in the “land of dreams,” she appears to submit to what seems like her fate. Yet amid the preparations, a brief moment of forgetfulness alters the course of events and transforms her life. Where did she leave her passport? Embarking on a thrilling journey through Cairo on the eve of a new year, she gradually moves closer to recovering her lost self.
A socially critical comedy that brilliantly reflects on the transformations affecting Egyptian society amid the rise of consumerism and neoliberalism. The final film of the great diva Faten Hamama, the most influential actress in the history of Arab cinema, widely known as its “First Lady.” Egypt’s official submission to the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film in 1993.
ALFILM presents Land of Dreams in honour of the great art director and production designer Onsi Abou Seif, and as a tribute to the recently deceased Egyptian director Daoud Abdel Sayed (1946-2025), who enriched Arab cinema with numerous masterpieces. (IA)
The screening will take place in the presence of Onsi Abou Seif.
