In the 1990s, to force the Marsh Arabs (or Ahwaris) out as retaliation for their role in the uprising against Saddam Hussein’s rule, the Mesopotamian marshlands in Iraq were almost fully drained. The stated reasoning was of course different, namely to reclaim agricultural land and exterminate breeding grounds for mosquitoes.This remains one of the worst ecological disasters of the 20th century.
