The city of Lyd (also known as Lod), northwest of Jerusalem, tells its own tragic story (with voice-over by Palestinian star Maisa Abd Elhadi). From its flourishing days under the Ottomans to its modern transformation into a prominent urban crossroads in the early twentieth century, the story also recounts the massacres Lyd witnessed during the Nakba, which left a devastating impact on its population, many of whom remain displaced in refugee camps to this day. A sci-fi documentary that juxtaposes the city’s past with its present, LYD traces the contours of a place marked by political tensions, threats of dispossession and the structural injustices faced by its Palestinian minorities. Yet, through animated sequences, the film also envisions speculative futures the city could have lived if it had been spared colonization, war, and displacement.
The film received the FIPRESCI Award for Best Documentary at the Amman International Film Festival in 2023.
