Set in November 2015 on Tunisia’s Mghila Mountain, Red Path follows 13-year-old shepherd, Achraf, and his cousin Nizar as they tend to their flock with fleeting innocence. Inspired by true events, their day takes a harrowing turn when they are violently ambushed by fugitives that have taken refuge in the mountains. Nizar suffers a gruesome fate. What Achraf witnesses leaves him traumatized, thrusting him back into a world of grief, fear, and a community paralysed by helplessness and governmental neglect.
Red Path continues Lotfi Achour’s exploration of Tunisia’s contradictions. Oscillating between hope and despair, the film foregrounds innocence in the face of violence, and resilience against oppression. By blending stark realism with haunting, dreamlike imagery, Red Path captures both the tenderness of childhood and the devastating impact of loss and trauma, offering a visually arresting and emotionally searing portrait of a nation and a boy on the edge of survival.
Premiered at the Locarno Film Festival’s “Filmmakers of the Present” section, Red Path has garnered international acclaim, including the Golden Yusr for Best Feature Film and Best Director at the Red Sea Film Festival.
The film contains some graphic violence that may be distressing for sensitive viewers.
