In a working-class neighborhood in Cairo, 30-year-old Hassan (Essam Omar) and his small family – his mother (Samaa Ibrahim) and dog, Rambo – find themselves facing eviction. Hassan’s mother decides to file a lawsuit, infuriating their landlord Karem who begins to harass Hassan. One day, Karem attacks Hassan but Rambo, his loyal companion, comes to his defense, further enraging Karem. The incident marks the beginning of a daunting journey: a physical one as he travels through the megalopolis in search for a safe haven for his beloved dog, and a psychological one of self-discovery in which he confronts his loneliness, his past, his deepest fears and aspirations. Seeking Haven for Mr. Rambo explores a generation’s complex relationship with Egypt’s modern society. Director Mansour describes it as “the paradox of intense love intertwined with fear and resentment – a relationship where we often feel like stray dogs chased through the city, yet unable to find any other place to belong.”
The film was awarded the Grand Prize at the 2024 Red Sea International Film Festival.
