A strange yellow dust covers the sky over an abandoned rural area marked by murderous atrocities from the time of French colonialism and later during the civil war. In a short span of time, the dust transforms into yellow storms that descend upon the whole country. Nacer (Khaled Benaïssa), a journalist, covers the phenomenon for his newspaper. Meanwhile, as unexplained events multiply, his wife Fajar (Camélia Jordana)—long presumed dead—reappears. Others who were thought to be gone seem unwilling to depart.
Confronted with the increasingly menacing winds, the city spirals into madness and Nacer must unravel the pasts that haunt him, just as they haunt his country. A mesmerizing debut by Franco-Algerian filmmaker Dania Reymond-Boughenou, the film animates, with a refined visual language, the postcolonial predicament faced by the former colonies of the Maghreb. Silent Storms had its world premiere at the 21st Marrakech International Film Festival in 2024.
