The Stranger

A Druze village in the occupied Golan Heights, near the Syrian border. Adnan (Ashraf Barhom), a doctor without a license, is in crisis. He drinks to forget his problems and to numb an existential sense of meaninglessness in the face of his personal defeats, entangled with those of his hometown and community. His father (Mohamed Bakri), bitterly disappointed by his son’s failure to meet his expectations, cuts him out of his will.
Adnan’s life takes a new turn when he encounters a wounded Syrian man who has crossed the border. The young man’s plight and his quest for freedom awaken in Adnan a renewed sense of purpose. He decides to help him, even if it means going against the rules and expectations of the village community.
Ameer Fakher Eldin’s strikingly crafted debut is a powerful depiction of the oppressiveness of ongoing occupation. The Stranger had its world premiere at the 2021 Venice Film Festival in the Giornate degli Autori section.
This screening is presented by ALFILM as a tribute to the legendary Palestinian actor Mohamed Bakri (1953–2025), who makes, albeit briefly, one of his final notable appearances in this film.
Followed by a talk with the director.
