Like a stranger in one’s own family: While filmmaker Samira El Mouzghibati and her four sisters share a close bond, the daughters‘ relationship with their mother is distant and cold – marked by anger, powerlessness, and disappointment. Raised in Belgium, El Mouzghibati travels to Morocco with her mother in an attempt to reconcile her with her mother, visiting her home village in the Rif Mountains.

Interspersed with home video footage and old family photos, the result is a film about toxic family dynamics, the struggle with traditions and the fight for a self-determined life – with a complex and complicated mother at the center.

(Y)our mother is El Mouzghibati’s debut film and will premiere at Visions du Réel in 2024, where it won the FIPRESCI Prize.
